Faculty Search Coaches are faculty and administrators who are well versed in the literature on bias in faculty hiring and the strategies for mitigating it, as well as in best practices for facilitating equity-based conversations. They serve as facilitators for Faculty Search Committee Workshops, sponsored by ADVANCE and the Office of Diversity & Inclusion.
Who are Faculty Search Coaches?
Coaches have a proven track of engagement on diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in their own unit and/or professional associations; openness to engaging with campus constituents; good communication skills; and the ability to problem-solve quickly. We anticipate that Equity Administrators, and other faculty or staff involved in campus DEI activities may be particularly well-suited for this role. In addition, we hope that faculty and administrators who serve as faculty search coaches may be well-suited for serving in campus leadership roles, including as Equity or Diversity officers, in the future.
What are the Expectations for Coaches?
Coaches are expected to:
- Complete a train-the-trainer course facilitated by ADVANCE/ODI. The course examines bias awareness/reduction, evidence-based best practices for improving faculty hiring, and group facilitation skills.
- Facilitate (both online and in-person) campus workshops for faculty search committees. Workshops are typically facilitated in pairs and organized by the ADVANCE Program.
Coaches receive a small professional development stipend to recognized their service.
How do I apply to become a coach?
The applications form for the third cohort of coaches will open early Spring 2025.
Faculty and staff who have been trained as coaches previously can be found here.
