Equity Coaches Training Program

To enhance the capacity of departments, colleges, and campus committees to reduce bias and enhance equity in the academic work environment, the ADVANCE Program, in collaboration with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Office of Faculty Affairs, is launching an Equity Coaches program. Equity coaches are faculty and administrators who are well versed in the literature on bias in the academic work environment and the strategies for mitigating it, as well as in best practices for facilitating equity-based conversations. They will serve as facilitators of a range of ADVANCE-workshops related to equity in faculty evaluation, inclusive hiring best practices, among other content areas.

We are seeking nominations (including self-nominations) of faculty and campus administrators (all genders) who would like to participate in the inaugural cohort Equity Coaches. Nominees should have a proven track of engagement on diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in their own unit and/or professional associations; openness to engaging with campus constituents; good communication skills; and the ability to problem-solve quickly. Coaches will receive training (approximately 3 days) and coaching feedback and be expected to facilitate 3-4 workshops during the 2022-2023 academic year.

We anticipate that Equity and Diversity Officers, former/current ADVANCE Professors, and others involved in campus DEI activities may be particularly well-suited for this role. In addition, we hope that faculty and administrators who serve as Equity Coaches may be well-suited for serving in campus leadership roles, including as Equity or Diversity officers, in the future.

About the Coaching Curriculum and Selection Process:
Priority deadline for nominations will be January 31, 2022. We anticipate recruiting 8-10 coaches to participate in the inaugural training program during Spring 2022. Coaches will be selected by the ADVANCE staff in conjunction with ODI and OFA. All nominees will be notified by Feb 15 about their application status and receive next steps, including training date(s) (we anticipate 3 full day trainings during the course of spring 2022). We anticipate these trainings will be mostly virtual.

Coaches will receive intensive training/coachingfrom ADVANCE/ODI related to bias awareness/reduction, evidence-based best practices, and group facilitation. Coaches will be prepared to facilitate workshops on topics such as: Inclusive Faculty Hiring; Equitable Faculty Evaluation; Preparing COVID-19 Impact Statements; and Mitigating Bias as a Bystander. Audiences may include faculty, academic leaders/staff, and/or graduate students as relevant. The curriculum for each workshop will be developed by ADVANCE/ODI.

After completing the training, each coach may be asked to facilitate 3-4 workshops (potentially beginning in mid spring 2022) in pairs depending on availability, campus interest, and skill. Workshops will be virtual and logistical aspects of the workshop will be facilitated by ADVANCE.
