About Inclusive Hiring

The ADVANCE Program and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion offer Inclusive Faculty Hiring Workshops for faculty and staff involved in faculty hiring. The workshop contains two components: a synchronous, virtual workshop facilitated by ADVANCE and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and six modules search committee members can complete asynchronously (via UMD Open Learning). Participants receive an invitation to the asynchronous workshop after completing the live synchronous component. Completion of the workshop fulfills one of the departmental requirements of the Faculty Advancement at Maryland For Inclusive Learning and Excellence (FAMILE) Initiative. 

In 2023-2024, most workshops will be facilitated by Equity Coaches, faculty and staff who have been trained in inclusive hiring strategies and best practices for mitigating bias. Learn more about the Equity Coaches Program here.

Departments/units may also wish to invite to ADVANCE/ODI to conduct the Inclusive Hiring Workshop for all department/unit members (e.g., at a department or college-wide meeting). Depending on capacity, we are happy to schedule unit-specific workshops.

Certificates of Completion

After completing the Inclusive Hiring workshop, faculty and staff remain certified for three academic years. Faculty and staff who completed the Inclusive Hiring Workshop in AY2021-2022 or AY2022-2023 do not to re-take the workshop in AY2023-2024 as part of the FAMILE Application.
