Who Should Participate in AFD?

  • Full-time (TTK & PTK) faculty members and postdocs of color and from racially minoritized backgrounds are welcome.
  • The program is open to AFD alumni, as well as new faculty and postdocs.
  • Benefits of participating in AFD:
    • Build a cross-campus network of colleagues and potential collaborators.
    • Learn critical strategies on advancement and success.
    • Connect with potential mentors and learn about the university from senior scholars.

Dr. Akua Asa-Awuku

Dr. Akua Asa-Awuku is a Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park in the department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.  She is also the Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the A. James Clark School of Engineering. She received her Ph.D and MS in Chemical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.  She received her B.S in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Dr. Asa-Awuku's primary research interest is understanding and predicting aerosol sources and interactions with water as it pertains to air quality, climate, and health.

  • The professional community will meet for six professional development seminar (three each semester) and one networking reception in 2023-2024. Each seminar will focus on specific aspects of career and scholarly development, networking, and other topics identified by participants
  • We ask that participants commit to attending all of the monthly meetings to receive the full benefits of the program. 
  • Meeting dates:

  • Welcome Reception: 8/22/23, 4-5pm. Register

  • Fall Lunch Meetings (12-2pm): 9/22/23; 11/3/23

  • Spring Lunch Meetings (12-2pm): 1/19; 2/23; 4/5
  • End of Year Writing Retreat and Celebration (9am-1pm): 5/10

Past AFD facilitators include Dr. Stephen B. Thomas, Dr. Carol Espy-Wilson, and Dr. Bridget Turner Kelly.

ADVANCING Faculty Diversity is a year-long peer network that is designed for faculty and postdocs of color and from racially minoritized groups of all genders. The network is facilitated by Dr. Akua Asa-Awuku, Professor in the A. James Clark School of Engineering.

In 2023-2024, AFD will host six professional development seminars (three in the Fall 2023 semester and three in the Spring 2024 semester)  and one networking reception (Aug 22, 2023). Each seminar will focus on specific aspects of career and scholarly development, networking, and other topics identified by participants.
