ADVANCE offers a series of workshops throughout the year on a variety of topics for faculty. These stand-alone sessions provide opportunities for learning, connection, and professional development without the year-long commitment of participating in a Faculty Peer Network.

  • Addressing Career Disruptions in Promotion 

    Addressing Career Disruptions in Promotion workshop series, offered in collaboration with the Office of Faculty Affairs, provides guidance on navigating career disruptions in the promotion process. Sessions are designed for both academic leaders and faculty candidates, with practical information to support equitable and informed promotion reviews.

  • Advancing Faculty Diversity - "Let's Talk" Series

    Hosted by the Advancing Faculty Diversity Network, the Let’s Talk series creates space for faculty to connect with colleagues and have candid conversations about navigating their careers and finding opportunities for growth within the university. Sessions will focus on building leadership and professional skills, navigating common faculty challenges, and sharing strategies and experiences that can help faculty make informed decisions about their next steps. As a part of this series, ADVANCE will be hosting a full day writing retreat in collaboration with ABRI.

    Navigating Service Demands? Let’s Talk.

    Social science research shows that faculty of color often encounter heavy service loads that can take time away from research, teaching, and/or other duties more commonly rewarded in academe (Domingo et al., 2022; Guillaume & Apodaco, 2022; Griffin et al., 2013). In this interactive panel, UMD faculty will discuss their approach to navigating service.

  • Faculty Mentoring Matters

    Join us for a practical workshop series designed for faculty and academic leaders interested in strengthening faculty mentoring within their departments. Through interactive discussions, evidence-based practices, and insights from guest speakers, participants will explore effective mentoring strategies, learn how to build strong mentoring relationships and teams, and discover approaches to developing mentoring policies and practices that support faculty success across departments, colleges, and campuses.

  • Office Hours & Aftercare: The ADVANCE Faculty Parenting Series

    Office Hours & Aftercare: The ADVANCE Faculty Parenting Series is a new discussion series designed to support faculty navigating the intersection of academic careers and parenting. Through a mix of in-person and virtual sessions, participants will have opportunities to connect with colleagues, learn about campus resources and policies, and share experiences and strategies for navigating the demands of work and family.

    Session 1: Academic Parenthood Across Career Stages

    This interactive discussion features faculty who have (or ARE!) navigating parenting at different stages of their academic careers.

  • PTK Promotion Bootcamp

    Join us for an all-day workshop designed to support professional-track (PTK) faculty as they prepare for promotion. The bootcamp will provide an overview of the promotion process, key expectations, and guidance on developing strong promotion materials, including the personal statement. Sessions will combine structured presentations, examples of dossier materials, dedicated time for reflection and planning, and opportunities for discussion with colleagues across appointment types and ranks.

  • Understanding and Addressing Bias in the Academic Work Environment

    Offered in partnership with Bias Incident Support Services (BISS), this interactive workshop series helps faculty recognize and address bias in academic settings. Participants will explore strategies for responding to bias, fostering inclusive work environments, and supporting equitable faculty experiences.
