Sarah Penniston-Dorland

Sarah Penniston-Dorland is a Professor and the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Geology in the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. She holds a PhD from Johns Hopkins University, an MS from the University of Texas at Austin, and a BA from Harvard University. She is a metamorphic geologist and geochemist who studies fluid-rock interactions and tectonic processes in the earth’s crust. She collects field data, recently in California and the Alps, and integrates it with geochemical data collected in labs at UMD and around the world. She has a specific focus on the study of metamorphic rocks exhumed from paleo-subduction zones. She was a Research Associate at the National Museum of Natural History and is currently a Visiting Investigator at the Carnegie Institution for Science. She currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Metamorphic Geology.
